The founder of PayPal, Peter Thiel, has a radical plan: create a floating nation built in the Pacific Ocean and free humanity from politicians.
Hotels, houses, offices and restaurants will be built in 2020 by the Seasteading Institute, a non-profit organization that hopes to “free humanity from politicians”.
What do you think about this?
In January the firm made a deal with French Polynesia to establish an experimental nation off its coast. Joe Quirk, president of the Seasteading Institute, said he wants to see “thousands” of floating cities by the year 2050.
That is, we could know the creation of an independent nation that floats in international waters and operates within its own laws.
The first island is being financed by a virtual currency, a new concept that is gaining popularity in Silicon Valley, in which money is generated by the masses through the creation and sale of a virtual currency.

The non-profit organization expects to raise around 60 million dollars by 2020 to build a dozen buildings.
The structures will have ‘green roofs’ covered in vegetation and the construction will use local bamboo, coconut fiber, wood, recycled metal and plastic.
First revealed in January, the plans have been approved by the government of French Polynesia, which is now creating a special economic zone for the floating nation to operate under its own commercial laws.
THE SMALL COUNTRY
Consisting of a collection of 118 islands in the South Pacific, with a population of just over 200,000, the Seasteading Institute has granted 40 hectares of beach to operate. French Polynesia is interested in the project as the area is at risk due to sea level rise.
It may seem like an ambitious plan, but the group believes that semi-independent cities would be the perfect place to try new modes of government and agricultural methods. “If you could have a floating city, it would essentially be a newly created country,” said Mr. Quirk.
