An extraterrestrial mineral that’s never been seen before on our planet has been discovered inside a meteorite.
When the yellowish stone was found in Siberia back in 2016, it looked unremarkable. But scientists have just revealed the results of a test which shows the substance is totally new and has never been observed on Earth.
Geologists from Ural Federal University, Novosibirsk State University and the Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Science named the mineral ‘uakitite’, after the Uakit region in Siberia where the meteorite was collected.
Most of the metal which made up the meteor is called kamacite, an iron-nickel alloy that’s only ever found on Earth when it falls from space.
Hidden among these unremarkable substance was tiny amounts of uakitite that were roughly the same size as a human blood cell and much smaller than the thickness of a human hair.
