According to La Prensa de Monclova, a mother belonging to Jehovah’s Witnesses prevented her 10-month-old son from receiving a blood transfusion that cost him his life.
The child was injured in a traffic accident on Montessori Avenue in the Mexican city of Monclova (Coahuila state).
Despite the opposition of the mother, the passing away of this 10-month-old baby in Clinic 7 of the IMSS (Mexican Institute of Social Security) revealed the lack of coordination among the institutions, since the aid was not available. The PRONNIF (Procurator for Children, Girls and Family) was required to obtain a transfusion.
The small Diego Kalev, was the victim of a serious trauma and, although he had been reanimated after the accident, unfortunately he passed away shortly after.
Although the IMSS did not specify the causes of death, it was not officially known that it was due to the child’s internal injuries, but it has not been confirmed.
THIS SITUATION REVEALED:
The lack of communication between the institutions, since the mother refused to have the child transfused for religious reasons, since they belong to the sect of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Because of this, the IMSS staff notified PRONNIF and asked them to intercede in order to grant an order and make the transfusion that the child required to survive, but there was no response.
The Regional Delegate of PRONNIF, Cecilia Ramos López, indicated that the procedure was not initiated because the director of the hospital did not present the required office and only did it through a telephone call.
He noted that, as a procedure, the IMSS staff was informed that this document should be presented in case they need support, as they are documents requested by the judges, as well as a medical certificate indicating that the donation is required to authorize it.
It was said that the death of the child was not due to the lack of transfusion, but because of the injuries; however, this treatment was required, although the consequences of the crash did not allow this to happen.
